Pneumatic forklifts are common in shipping and warehouse operations. Also referred to as pallet trucks or pump trucks, they are used so as to move materials and products around on wooden pallets using metal forks which are mounted on a wheeled counterweight. The counterweight contains a pump that could raise the forks off the ground. A pallet truck is designed to be operated by a single person.
Pallet trucks should be operated carefully to avoid loss of control while raising heavy loads. Equipment should be inspected before operating. Clear the wheels area of any obstructions. Make certain that the handle smoothly turns. The pallet should be carefully stacked to guarantee that nothing will fall off during transportation.
To release air in the pump and lower the forks, squeeze the lever found on the inside of the metal loop on the end of the pallet truck's handle. The forks can then be pushed into the slots of the pallet. The forks should be in the middle so as to ensure even distribution of the pallet's weight across them. Raise the forks from the ground by pumping the pneumatic lift's handle until the pallet has fully cleared the ground. Do not lift the pallet very high or the forklift can unbalance.
