The Future
In order to make rough terrain forklifts as efficient as possible, many attachments have been engineered and made like booms, winches, and rotating fork carriages, to allow the forklift to place materials more accurately. The booms or articulating booms come with 2 different extendible arms and are able to reach up and over structures in order to position loads in the center of upper floors or on interior roof slope settings. New products and attachments are being developed and engineered all the time and would debut in the future.
Many improvements have been made with extra safety features becoming more prevalent. For instance, load-reach management devices can restrict the forklift's reach automatically, based on the load being handled rather than relying on the operator. Pressure sensors are used in order\to be able to determine the load weight. This information is sent to a tiny electronic memory device which had all the load-reach limitations pre-programmed into it.
The memory of the boom would compare the extension and the angle of the boom with the safety limits, once the load is being placed into position. There is a warning system or an important lock-up device that prevents the operator from over-reaching and possibly causing the forklift to tip over or the boom to fail.
A Motorized Pallet Truck usually goes by other names including: Walkie or Walkie-Rider. These pieces of machinery are basically a motorized version of a pallet jack. They are available in both "Walkie" models and "Rider" versions.
The walkie type as the name implies, is made to allow the operator to walk along the machine as they pick up and move loads. The operator stands on a small platform on the Rider model. The rider models are great for frequent moving of loads over extended distances within warehouses and manufacturing operations. They are really maneuverable and fast.
It is not recommended to pick up and move tall or unstable loads because there are no safety cages on these models. A rider might be the perfect answer if you are looking for a cheap method for moving cargo from point A to point B. If though, you are required to transport heavy loads short distances, and prefer to use a more employee-friendly unit instead of a pallet jack, the walkie model could be the right choice.
Order Selector
An Order Selector also goes by the name of Order picker. This equipment is specially made for manual handling of less-than-pallet-load quantities in racking. There are fixed forks attached to a platform in the Man-up design. This particular platform elevates both the load and the operator in order to facilitate manual unloading and loading from racking areas.
Usually, the order selector is a very narrow aisle vehicle that can work in smaller aisles. They are extremely useful pieces of equipment in cycle counting situations as well as during physical inventories. Order selectors are available in lift heights up to 40 feet high, although models that range in the twenty to thirty foot range are much more popular.
